Description
There is often amazement at how a culture that seems familiar can upend our expectations. This volume offers 18 studies on characteristic peculiarities of Rome. A first group is devoted to the concept of text and literature, such as the relationship between image and text or literature and reality. A second group is devoted to the way in which the cultural change brought about by the reception of Greek culture is dealt with. A third group deals with central discourses on a ‘good life’, including time, justice and freedom, with regard to both individual and political and social orders. All the contributions seek to explain specific traits from Roman culture’s own categories.

Reviews
