This first introduction to cultural semiotics presents culture as a symbol-based program with which a society (re)shapes its living environment. It becomes clear how the respective objectives of shaping the world emerge from the purposeful use of its central figures of thought. Illustrative example analyses and (re)interpretation processes of concepts such as space, time, work, family, gender and growth shed light on the ambivalent development history of Western capitalist culture. Socio-cultural change in connection with technological developments and the pursuit of economic profit can be read as an ongoing symbolic (re)shaping of the living environment.
