Ten Years after the Baltic States re-entered the International Stage

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania regained their independence in 1991. During the last ten years these three countries followed the historical and social-cultural implicitness and the wish of their people to return to the European community.
On their long journey »back to Europe« the Baltic states had to overcome the obstacles and barriers that the history of the 20th century had left behind for this region, on the seam between Western Europe and Russia.
The volume brings together, politicians, high-ranking civil servants and academic experts from the Baltic states and Germany.
The authors give a detailed inside-perspective on the respective motives and national interests as well as on the expectations and experiences that are related to the regained independence of the three Baltic states.
Furthermore the contributions focus on the development of the political, economical and social system, which marks the foundation for the relationship towards the European Union and NATO as the vital orientation of the foreign and security policy of the Baltic states.
