Description
The insufficient discharging of oily waste from the engine-rooms of ships is generally regarded as a main reason for the oil pollution of the seas. Environmentalists, the shipping-business and the administrations of ports take various ecological, economic, organisational and competitive stands and have therefore different views about the problem.
At this international congress the mentioned groups discussed possible solutions in order to find a basis for an EC-Directive on oil disposal from ships.
In addition, the proceedings of the Congress form an indispensable basis for the continuing discussion on the whole issue of waste disposal from sea-going vessels. The volume is of particular relevance for lawyers as well as for anyone who is practically engaged in environmental protection, shipping or ports.
Dr. H.-J. Koch is a legal expert in the field of environmental law and Director of the Institution for the Research of Environmental Law. The Director of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law Institute Dr. R. Lagoni, who also wrote the preparatory report of the congress, is an internationally renowned author of many publications on the law of the sea and the law of ports.
