Description
Empirical and comparative research into federalism has become the dominant approach in recent years, superseding theoretical and ideological analyses. There is a dearth of both a comprehensive historical account of the political debates surrounding modern federalism and an analysis of the relationship between federalism and democracy. This volume demonstrates the diversity of discourse on federalism from the early modern period to the EU. It analyses the path dependencies of certain traditions of thought and sheds light on constitutional regulations and principles of the federal tradition. In doing so, it presents a canon of ideas from the history of ideas that have had a lasting influence on the modern understanding of politics and democracy.
