This textbook provides an overview of important approaches to animal ethics in the past and present. Its guiding questions are how Western anthropocentrism can be overcome and how animals can be granted moral status. Following an understandable and clearly structured presentation of several ethical approaches, each of the eight chapters offers one or more source texts with questions as well as a practical case study for discussion among students, and also aiding them in their studies with an extensive bibliography and a glossary containing all relevant technical terms. The book is aimed at students of all disciplines, from veterinary medicine to philosophy and from biology to theology.
