The situation of students at universities is special, because the time in which they live and work in academia between science, peer group and independence is formative for the development of their personality. Communication is the medium of identity formation and self-expression and this communication process in academia is a central component of identity formation and self-expression for students. This communication process is not sufficiently protected as part of the development of personality at universities and thus there exists a situation of endangerment of the identity-forming communication process in academia. Therefore, the protection of fundamental rights needs to be extended to include the right to academic self-determination.
