Description
Since the breakdown of the Soviet Union and the independence of Ukraine in 1991, drastic steps have been made to overcome the past and to establish a new statehood in the second largest European country. With impressive efforts, Ukraine’s traditional Eastern orientation was combined with the re-opening of its society, institutions and markets to the West. Thus Ukraine is on the way to become a potential and important partner for the Euro-Atlantic security architecture in the 21st century.
On the eve of Ukraine’s third Presidential elections in October 1999, leading officials and experts from Ukraine, the United States and Germany investigated the challenges, possibilities and needs for the development of Ukrainian-U.S.-European cooperation. Their open and active debate of political, geopolitical, economic and security aspects of the partnership offers a deep analysis of the new established networks between Kyiv and the West.
This publication is part of a joint project of the Atlantic Council of Ukraine, the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, and the Center for European Integration Studies (ZEI).
