Food redistribution – the donation of surplus, still edible food to charitable organisations – is considered a key measure for reducing food waste. The thesis examines the question of whether a legal framework to promote the redistribution of food can be a suitable approach to reduce food waste. Some countries have already adopted regulations in this regard. But what exactly is food waste? When does food become waste – and can this status be legally revoked? This study analyses these questions by comparing the legislation in Germany, France and Italy.
