Description
This study examines the theme of redemption in Goethe’s ‘Faust’, advancing the central thesis that Faust is not redeemed in the course oft the drama, but is already redeemed from the beginning, yet only recognises this truth later on. Nietzsche's philosophical concept of the ‘innocence of becoming’ is used as the theoretical basis for the investigation, providing insights into the intellectual background of the drama. Looking at Faust's life in the light of Goethe's assumption of ‘original innocence,’ his redemption can be interpreted as the realisation of the eternal truth of being redeemed.
