The concept of sustainability seems to be omnipresent and associated with everything imaginable that is ‘good’. At the same time, the successes achieved in implementing supposedly sustainable behaviour are rather mixed.
This book therefore examines the variety of meanings of the term from a critical naturalistic perspective and with reference to current concepts of self-organisation, while also exploring the opportunities and limits of sustainable behaviour. In this way, a more nuanced concept of sustainability and the social dynamics behind it is developed, which can be understood as a fundamental contribution to more scientifically based discourses on the opportunities and limits of sustainable behaviour.
