This study corrects the dominant 'logical point of view' (Van Orman Quine) with a reflection on the polyvalent intentionality of consciousness, which reveals its self-understanding in the form of life that is significant for it: the energy-generating strong motive of the 'good life' (eu zen).
The threat to human beings and civil rights in the technologized world is addressed in terms of ethics of conviction and responsibility. An adequate understanding of nature is followed by a reassessment of enlightenment, autonomy, and human dignity. Cultures and values presuppose an intact nature. Economic growth damages it. The moral prerequisites of the world are clarified by a transcendental, culture-oriented hermeneutics.
