When DIE GRÜNEN were founded in the early 1980s, it was widely assumed in public and academic debate that “politics“ and “religion“ were incompatible. Nevertheless, numerous activists at the time attempted to incorporate forms of “religion“, “spirituality“ and “esotericism“ into the nascent party. The book sheds light on the extent to which such ideas found a place in the party and the discursive and material forms they could take. Last but not least, it discusses which positions provoked resistance within DIE GRÜNEN and which risked exclusion from the internal debate or even from the party itself.
