Description
Christian Wolff (1679-1754) is considered the most important and influential philosopher of the early and high Enlightenment. Under the guidance of philosophy and the so-called mathematical method, he sought to establish an encyclopedic system of science at the level of education of his time. By the middle of his century, Wolff had become an authority praised throughout Europe. Still praised by Kant as the "inventor of the spirit of thoroughness" in Germany, his fame soon faded. It was not until the great edition of Wolff's works, edited by Jean Ecole and others, that Wolff was rediscovered and international Wolff scholarship revived.
