Description
Josquin's settings of the Psalms are often regarded as a shift in music towards the emotive word. Yet this focus on modern listening expectations obscures a very different structural approach. For a Psalm embeds its message within a structure that can be understood in almost mathematical terms, employing all forms of gematria and calculations involving large numbers and their ratios. These multifaceted aspects, which open up to fundamentally new approaches to the analysis of 15th- and 16th-century music, are explored by authors who, in addition to musicology, come from disciplines such as theology, Jewish studies, Egyptology and history.
