The Schlosstheater in Ludwigsburg houses a particularly rare inventory of stage decorations from the second half of the 18th century. The decorations, which are significant in terms of art and theatre history, bear witness to the heyday of theatre under Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg and, at the same time, to lively developments in European stage design at a time when the stylistic trends of the late Baroque, Rococo and early Classicist periods intermingled. This richly illustrated book is the first to present and comprehensively analyse the collection in its entirety. New insights into the dating, attribution and provenance of the stage decorations highlight their special value and enable them to be placed in an international context.
