In her study ‘Zufällig liberal?’, Debora Müller uses grounded theory to create a theory about the development and content of liberal Muslims’ understanding of Islam and their positioning in the midst of Germany’s Islamic landscape.
This positioning is characterised by differentiation from large associations and places the expression of religious needs at the centre of liberal Muslims’ lives. They develop their understanding of Islam with the help of the Islamic legal method iǧtihād, which they understand as the use of their own intellect.
This study is the first to provide an insight into the views of liberal Muslims in Germany, with the interviewees themselves having their say, so that a deep understanding of their mindset is achieved.
