Description
Piscator's stage, 1927–1929 – what else? The history of the Theatre on Nollendorfplatz – opened in 1906 alongside concert hall, skittles alley, billiards room and restaurants – is the story of a tenacious struggle for survival from the very beginning; a theatre which, with a class-struggle interlude, tried its hand at serious drama just as it established itself within the Nazi entertainment industry. Destroyed in 1944, it operated as travelling theatre without permanent venue until 1949; its ruins were cleared away in 1960. Thirteen biographically oriented texts shed a bright light on a forgotten chapter in Berlin’s theatre scene from the perspectives of theatre studies, musicology, cultural studies and history.
