The political struggle to shape the statutory pension insurance scheme (GRV) against the background of demographic change has led to an unbroken demand for studies on reform measures. This book provides an introductory overview of the institutional framework of the GRV and its historical development. To investigate fiscal sustainability and intergenerational burden sharing in the GRV, this study combines the generational accounting method with a detailed entitlement-based pension projection model. On this basis, the sustainability effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ‘double stop line’ and a rule-based increase in the standard retirement age are examined.
