In her qualitative research, Michaela Sorber provides a comprehensive analysis of how couples develop various forms of partner relationship when confronted with a chronic illness. She demonstrates how couples follow various and alternative paths in order to continue to be able to live on together under the influence of the illness. With this aim, they continuously balance both their togetherness and their individual and partnership-related interests within the framework of relationship work. This study provides a detailed view of the reality of life and relationship forms of those affected and broadens the knowledge of relationship-work for concepts of family- and relationship-oriented care for couples.
