Description
This study analyses the persistence of Kemalist policies within Turkish political parties in the 21st century on the basis of their party and election programmes.
The findings show that the majority of currently influential Turkish parties draw on essential patterns from the Kemalist period. It is argued that the AKP also relies on the continuation of fundamental Kemalist policies, but at the same time positions itself decisively against the Kemalist elites, who are perceived as paternalistic. Thus, the party presents itself as the liberator of the Muslim nation. This combination of adopting and rejecting the Kemalist past was a decisive factor in the success of Erdoğan and his party.
With a foreword by Prof. Dr. Thomas Demmelhuber.
