The public sector provides essential services of general interest. It is of great importance in many economies but is only dealt with marginally by economics. This handbook therefore fills a significant gap in the landscape of research literature, in which it has a unique status. The book reveals various disciplinary approaches to the public economy: from history and law to business administration, economics and the social sciences. Important sectors of the public economy, such as the waste, water, credit, energy and housing industries as well as transport, in which public companies play a prominent role, are examined in depth in separate chapters. The 2nd edition of the book has been comprehensively updated and expanded to include current legal and economic developments.
