Description
Hundreds of thousands of women in Poland have protested against restrictive abortion laws and remain politically active. There is now a nationwide network of women's groups campaigning for environmental protection, sexual self-determination, equality in the workplace and against domestic violence. Women are also increasingly making their voices heard in politics and academia. Today, feminism is a reality in Poland, even if it is fiercely resisted by right-wing parties and the Catholic clergy. Reinhold Vetter analyses the significance of the Polish women's movement for the democratic development of the country and looks at the role of women in specific periods of the 19th and 20th centuries.
