In the GDR, fiction took on the function of a surrogate public sphere, since the mass media did not provide it. This is also true of literature set in the scientific establishment and milieu, a segment comprising some 150 texts. This book makes this segment accessible. On the one hand, it opens up the topic of "science in the GDR" through the relevant fiction. On the other hand, it illustrates the information possibilities that GDR fiction offers for research into contemporary history - possibilities that have so far remained unused. Peer Pasternack can draw on some 25 studies on the history of science and education in the GDR that he has carried out since the 1990s.
