Equality is a basic value in democracies – and the bedrock of socialism. But what characterises socialist equality-oriented policy in practice, and how does it differ from that implemented in liberal democracies?
The case of Cuba serves as an example to answer this question. Analysing Cuban equality and anti-discrimination rules, its welfare and health systems etc., this study examines how the ideal of equality is put into practice in a socialist system. Thus, comparisons between Cuba and liberal systems become possible, and differences between the two, which are often simply attributed to state economy or crisis, can be described in a more precise and conclusive manner, which thus sheds light on the tension between equality and liberty.
