Description
In a society in which poverty, and differences in income and education persist, people have started to call for social justice. This volume explores the changes in the philosophical character of social justice and how the concept is being rethought in the light of contemporary challenges. It also explores how social justice has been used by politicians to justify their reforms. While social justice is widely discussed in public, the author underlines its significance here using an empirical investigation with Google’s Ngram Viewer, which shows a connection between historical upheavals and increasing demands for social justice. The volume addresses key issues, such as the development of the philosophical concept from Plato to Martha Nussbaum; the influence of Catholic social doctrine; and the role of social justice in national and international laws. Finally, it discusses the problem of the meaning of social justice becoming increasingly blurred due to its prominence and political use.
