Description
August Wilhelm Schlegel’s canonical Shakespeare translation (1797-1810) had a significant influence on the English playwright’s reception in the German-speaking world – and helped to make Shakespeare a “German classic”. A well-known paradigm for this is the drama „Hamlet“, which has interested authors and intellectuals like no other play and whose hero became in Schlegel’s translation a symbol of Germany. This is the first critical edition of A.W. Schlegel’s working manuscript of „Hamlet“. The manuscript is reproduced in its original size, and there is a parallel diplomatic (i.e. reproducing the form and markings of the original) transcription. The „Hamlet“ manuscript is therefore not only of great interest from a philological perspective: Kaltërina Latifi’s edition offers a new basis for academic engagement with Schlegel’s translation practice and for further consideration from the perspective of translation theory. An epilogue discloses the origins of the „Hamlet“ translation, taking into account the available sources. The “documents on the edition history” are also listed in chronological order.
