Skala - Akkord - Funktion

In the historical process of transformation to major-minor tonality, the tension between compositional practice and theory is of particular relevance: the theoretical concepts used to encompass the horizontally, vertically and tonally hierarchising moments of a musical phrase developed over a period of more that 200 years. This makes it considerably more difficult to create a historically adequate description of individual musical works in the period between Glarean and Rameau. Therefore this volume highlights central moments in the history of theory during this time, augmented by the examination of works intended to demonstrate the position of each composition in relation to theory.
