Details
Friedrich Schiller, the grand master of the classical aesthetic of autonomy, was also a political thinker. In the 1790s, reading Immanuel Kant upset him, as did the French Revolution: abuse of power, political resistance, conspiracy and tyrannicide are just a few of the genuinely political themes that he repeatedly varies in literary terms. The articles in this volume consider the connection between the political, legal and ethical dimensions of Schiller's work. In addition to his 'big' dramas as well as his philosophical and historical writings, they examine the nexus of ethics, law and politics at the 'margins' of his work, in both his short works and his literary fragments.

Review | »The volume’s editors set the scene for a new approach to Schiller’s political thought in terms of emerging secularization... it is clear that this impressive volume of essays is destined to become an essential resource for anyone wishing to understand the profundity as well as the topicality of Schiller’s political thought.« Tim Mehigan, Arbitrium 1/2022, 68-71 »Das Verdienst der vorliegenden Aufsatzsammlung besteht darin, die intensive Auseinandersetzung Schillers mit historischen und zeitgenössischen staatstheoretischen Überlegungen zu dokumentieren und kritisch zu diskutieren, wobei Kant auch hier als zentraler Referenzpunkt Schillers erscheint, zugleich aber eine Vielzahl anderer intertextueller Bezüge offengelegt wird, die bislang in der Forschung wenig oder gar nicht beachtet wurden... sie verleihen dieser Dimension seines Schaffens eine sehr viel schärfere Kontur und regen zugleich an, einige der Referenztexte Schillers genauer in den Blick zu nehmen.« Julia Schöll, Das 18.
