Details
The European Union has now accepted the prospect of a gradual enlargement to Central and Eastern European Countries. To be sure the incorporation of these countries will be one of the main challenges to be faced by the Union in the next decade. This book discusses the main facets of the problem in a broad perspective, by analyzing the evolution of the countries in question since the collapse of communist regimes, and by reviewing the implications of enlargement for the European Union. It addresses issues such as the transition to democracy and to market economy, the security implications of enlargement, the ability of Central and Eastern European countries to integrate in the single market, the institutional implications of enlargement, etc. The contributors are political scientists, economists and lawyers from a variety of European countries. All contributions are byproducts of courses held during the Summer School of the Institut universitaire international (Luxembourg).
