Description
The book Aristophanes provides readers with an orientation for their reading of the most important poet of the Old Comedy in Classical Athens. Being primarily intended for students and teachers of the Classical Languages, New Literatures, and Comparative Studies, it presents research findings on the history and structure of the comedy genre, the performance culture of the era, and fundamental interpretations of the eleven comedies that have survived. Furthermore, the volume contains chapters on basic literary strategies, such as parody, satire, and the creation of utopian worlds, as well as a brief introduction to the relations of humour and comedy. The author is professor of ancient languages at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, Germany.
