German Schlager music has undergone great modernisation in recent years—stars like Helene Fischer, Andrea Berg, Vanessa Mai and Beatrice Egli have freed the genre from its outdated image. Fischer in particular is setting new standards through her acrobatic stage shows, modern pop–schlager songs and con-temporary music videos. This book aims to shed light on the genre's novel musical and performative parameters, its kinship with international pop, its image constructions on social media, and also the image of women and gender representations of the aforementioned four players. A genre that is listened to by more than 20 percent of the German population certainly has an impact on society through its images, lyrics, shows and media coverage.
