Karl Leonhard Reinhold is regarded as the most important interpreter and disseminator of Kantian philosophy, and the popularity of Immanuel Kant is closely linked to Reinhold's writings. But his own works also exerted a great influence on German idealism. Nevertheless, he has never enjoyed a similar degree of fame as Immanuel Kant, or even fame itself.
In this book, Franziska Götschl devotes herself to Reinhold’s lecture transcripts from the years 1792/93, which were first published in 2015, and sheds light on the relationship between Reinhold and Kant's contemporaneous works—as well as the means Reinhold used in his writings in the late 18th century to bring Kant's critique of reason closer to a broad public.

»Vorweggenommen seien hier gleich zwei Verdienste, welche der Autorin der vorliegenden Studie zuzubilligen sind. Sie nimmt sich der Sache unvoreingenommen an, verfährt bei der Auswertung der präsentierten Texte abwägend, geht auf Stärken und Schwächen von Reinholds Neudarstellung Kants ein. Sie hebt Reinhold nicht auf einen neuen Sockel, schmälert aber auch keineswegs seine pionierhaften Leistungen. Ihr Fazit, der Elementarphilosoph Reinhold wäre zwar ohne Kant nicht möglich gewesen, Kant ohne Reinhold aber „wohl nie zu solchem Ruhm oder einer solchen Aufmerksamkeit gelangt, wie es heutzutage der Fall ist“ (235), ist meines Erachtens nicht abwegig. Das zweite Verdienst der Autorin besteht darin, dass sie den Aufwand nicht scheut, die 2015 in Band 12 der Gesammelten Schriften Reinholds (Basel 2007 ff.; im Folgenden: RGS) zugänglich. gemachten Nachschriften zu Reinholds Jenaer Vorlesungen über „Logik und Metaphysik“ (Nachschrift Smid, 1792) und „Darstellung der Kritik der reinen Vernunft“ (Nachschrift Kalmann, 1792/93) in ihre Betrachtung und Evaluation einzubeziehen. Man darf auf weitere Erträge und Diskussionen der Autorin zur Reinhold-Interpretation gespannt sein.«
