Banalität des Geschlechts

Although gender has always been one of the key means of characterising a human’s idproduct, one gender-specific topic area was omitted from established academic philosophical debates for a long time. It was above all Judith Butler who gave new impetus to philosophical reflections on gender discourse and considered gender in more than mere terms of fixed identities. This book examines this change in philosophical anthropology and considers it in relation to previous fundamental assumptions about gender relations. In this respect, the question of whether Butler’s post-structural theory of gender performativity transcends fundamental anthropological notions of gender is paramount—above all in comparison to Lévi-Strauss’s alliance theory of kinship from the field of structural anthropology.
