Description
Christoph Scheibler (1589-1653), the son of a Lutheran preacher, was professor of philosophy at the University of Giessen from 1611. From 1625 until his death he was Superintendent of the city and county of Dortmund and head of the city’s grammar school.
His major work is the Opus Metapysicum, first published in Giessen in 1617 and reissued here. The author represents a new and independent direction in metaphyiscs, diverging from the Aristotelianism of the dominant Scholastic philosophy. The work had a great influence on contemporary philosophy and is one of the precursors of Wolff’s metaphysics.
