Description
In 1919, Gropius united the Weimar art schools to form the State Bauhaus. However, the incompatibility of the academy with the new ideas soon became apparent. The conflicts that erupted acted as catalysts in the self-discovery process of the young Bauhaus. Based on a social science concept of institutions, this study deals for the first time with the underestimated importance of the Weimar Bauhaus's predecessor institutions for the realization of its program. It sheds light on the emancipation of the Bauhaus from the academic legacy of the art school in the area of conflicts between assimilation and demarcation, political challenge and permanent pressure to justify itself, enthusiasm and disappointment.
