The devastating human rights situation in various parts of Africa forms one of the central causes of migration for many Africans fleeing to Europe. Against this background, the question of implementing human rights contracts – one of the major challenges of the African regional system – has come into focus. By analysing the procedural enforcement of substantive human rights in Africa, Sabrina Lauer concentrates on a topic which has been neglected in German scholarly literature to date. The thesis focuses on the organs and mechanisms established for the implementation under the respective human rights contracts. It presents a detailed picture of their mandate, work and the respective difficulties as well as the practical effect they have. Thereby, the accomplishments of the African regional human rights system become accessible for German-speaking readers interested in human rights.
