Details
The author examines the use of land, a legal subject of existential significance in the Roman Empire as well as today. In an interdisciplinary approach, the author raises three central questions relating to Roman law: What were the most relevant legal forms of land use, and how were they shaped in the context of societal and economic realities? In what way did the Romans practice a legal science? How can the examination contribute to possible solutions for today’s questions on land law and land policy? The answers lead to a well-founded and differentiated understanding of the use of land. They are based on an analysis of the historical legal sources and the writings of the Roman land surveyors.

Review »The data and observations made by LENNART GRIESE make his work a milestone in the study of Roman land surveying and land use system. His complex analyses and legal-dogmatic approach raise questions that no research with historical or technical focus has examined so far. Especially important are his observations on differences of opinions between law schools, which demonstrate how dynamic and changing in time the system of surveying and ownership was; GRIESE’s work is definitely an essential book for further research on the topic.«
