Description
From 1699 to 1711, Johann Mattheson composed five operas, two smaller stage plays and one act of another opera. The contexts of composition and performance, intertextual references to novels, historical accounts and other compositions are manifold. Mattheson's music is always of an exceptionally high standard and displays a distinctive personal style. For the first time, this study recognises the works in their entirety, examines the sources, libretti, protagonists involved and the compositions themselves from a wide range of perspectives and often goes far beyond its narrow object of investigation. It thus provides those interested in various disciplines with deep insights into Mattheson's stage work.
