Die Weltgesellschaft
Wie die abendländische Rationalität die Welt erobert und verändert hat
Nomos, 1. Edition 2016, 240 Pages
Description
Today’s global society is a product of global history as it developed from the history of the Western world. The dominance of Western war strategies and technology in particular, such as phalanx attack formations in ancient times and firearms in modern times, have led to a political concept of global conquest and world domination, and, therefore, to a form of world colonisation, from which today’s global society arose. The Western culture of rationality has fundamentally shaped all areas of culture through the geometrisation of space and the mathematisation of time. It has also shaped aesthetics and gender. Moreover, the development of rational science and the application of technology especially have significantly influenced our understanding of both the world and how we deal with it practically. Economic rationality has set in motion a sequence of economic exploitation, which has led to the current crisis in our technological and industrial society. Standards of rationality define poverty and wealth, and thus cause waves of migration and the radicalisation of religion.
This book identifies the history of Western rationality, including its irrationalities, as the central theme and main narrative of world history, and, therefore, deduces that today’s global society emerged from it.
