Substantive statements about the steps currently being taken by the middle generation, i.e. 30 to 59 year-olds, to provide for their retirement required the development of a separate research design, the empirical basis of which is a questionnaire-based survey conducted among a statistically relevant, representative group of 1,000 people, whose evaluation includes quantitative methods. The particular value of this study, which closes a gap in research, is that its approach and findings make it possible to gain robust insights into the factors that influence actors' decisions to accumulate real and capital assets as old-age provision for the first time.
