Description
The sixteen essays in this Festschrift, presented to Eckart Schütrumpf by his friends and colleagues, pay tribute to his influential work. The variety of topics – as well as the linguistic diversity (English, German, and Italian) – reflects the wide scope of Schütrumpf’s research interests. Philosophical contributions consider definitions of justice, the theoretical life, good governance, the proper care for others, and the nature of the Platonic Socrates. Other contributions investigate the tradition of Platonic and Aristotelian thought in Plutarch and Horace. Historical essays consider Thucydides’ relationship to Herodotus, the reception of tales of apotheosis in early Christian narratives, and the processes through which Olympia developed into a sacred space of Panhellenic significance. The collection concludes with more modern considerations: the idealization of Arcadia in the painting of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri and Nicolas Poussin, the appropriation of Spartan themes in the German sloganeering of the 19th to the 21st century, and Stephan Zweig’s conviction that historiography and literature can facilitate worldwide community.
