Gottloser Staat?

In his elegantly written monograph Staat ohne Gott. Religion in der säkularen Moderne, the renowned constitutional legal expert Horst Dreier promotes the achievements of the secular constitutional state without one-sidedly advocating a secular dictatorship of values. In analyses that are well founded in legal history and decisive in socio-political terms, Dreier describes the secularisation of the state precisely not only as a hopeless process of juridification, but also as a place where religious freedom can be won, which can strengthen the democratic nature of democracy. A state without God does therefore not anticipate a godless society but is perhaps the strongest argument for even religions being able to survive under post-metaphysical conditions of modernity.
