Greece and the European Union: Stranger among Partners?

Greece"s newly elected government under Kostas Simitis is setting its hopes in Europe. Yet, one remembers only too well how Athens, by its policy towards Macedonia, strained the endurance of its European partners. In the words of the late Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, Greece found itself "a stranger among partners".
This book is the result of a cooperative effort of German and Greek scholars. It deals with the central problems of Greece"s European policy; its subject is the Greek balance regarding the economic integration of the European Union and the implications for Greece as to the EU Single Market as well as the specific Greek interests concerning the European Union, including the question of monetary union. Aspects of foreign and security policy are discussed in detail.
Against the background of the continued evolution of the Maastricht Treaty, the authors present a timely and many-faceted picture of Greece"s European policy.
