Description
The book reflects the pivotal role of Heidegger and Nishida in the history of the development of modern Japanese philosophy as well as its retroactive influence on Heidegger's thought. Modern Japanese philosophy begins with Nishida. His thinking revolves around the central concept of nothingness, which is derived from Zen Buddhism, whose teachings essentially form the foundation of the Kyoto School and to which Martin Heidegger was also drawn. Nevertheless, Nishida took a critical view of Heidegger's work. The relationship between Heidegger, modern Japanese philosophy and Zen Buddhism is characterized by this tension between mutual admiration, influence and critical reception.
