Details
The book contains the Proceedings of a conference held in Naples in October 2011, which was the conclusion of a two-year investigation conducted at the Universities of Milan, Naples and Benevento and financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.

Compared to other European initiatives that have concerned the same subject, the results presented here are characterized by the willingness to study the disadvantaged categories or areas of the Greek and especially Roman world (slaves and freedmen, foreigners, women and children, but also people with physical or mental impairments) from a legal perspective, but taking into account the social and economic dimensions.

The contributions are distributed in five sections: 1) foreigners in the Roman world; 2) the status of women; 3) the condition of slaves; 4) typical situations of marginalization or subordination of people who lived on the outskirts of law for a diversity due to economic, social, cultural or religious conditions; 5) physical and mental impairments.
