Description
The aim of this volume is to examine various themes of the Ibadi religion from its beginnings to the present.
Ibadism emerged in the early Islamic era and played a crucial role in the development of Islamic legal and religious doctrine.
It continues to have a major influence on the Middle East and North Africa to this day. Despite its long tradition, Ibadism and especially the Ibadite doctrine are still little known and often misunderstood.
Since only a few significant comprehensive works on Ibadi doctrine are available in European languages, this volume attempts to remedy the situation by making the characteristic theological teachings of this influential Islamic current known to a wide audience and addressing both experts and lay people.
Using many examples from different periods and sources and with an interdisciplinary approach, the authors address questions of dogma and confession, understanding of faith, theological controversies, re-evaluation of theological sources, and Ibadite "modernism" in Oman and North Africa in the last century.
Medieval Ibadi sources are crucial to understanding the early development of the movement and the disputes over doctrine and politics that distinguish Ibadi doctrine from Sunni Islam. On the other hand, this volume also underlines the importance of looking at Ibadite sources from the 19th and 20th centuries, when the Ibadite reform movement began to seek a rapprochement between Islam and modernity.

Reviews
"Der Band Ibadi Theology wird noch länger ein wichtiges Referenzwerk zur Ibadiya bleiben und dazu beitragen, dass diese Minderheit in angemessener Weise und im Rahmen der islamischen und arabischen (sowie berberischen) Geistesgeschichte behandelt wird."
