Details
Johann Baptist Cramer (1771-1858), descendant of a family of musicians from the German Kurpfalz, is known today at most for his piano etudes; during his lifetime he was a public figure in the European musical world, not only as a pianist, composer, and teacher, but also as an entrepreneur in piano manufacturing and publishing. Through this multiple function, as many 'pianistes compositeurs' of his time fulfilled, interactions occurred between different areas of musical life, between instrumental technology, human dexterity, and musical aesthetics, between entrepreneurship, canon formation, and popular culture. In this volume, Cramer's life, work, and environment are examined from a variety of perspectives with suggestions for performance and improvisational practices today. With contributions by Sanne Behrends Lorenzen | Gigliola di Grazia | Michael Fischer | Christa Jost | Janina Klassen | Leonardo Miucci | Laurens Patzlaff | Claudia Schweitzer | Philipp Teriete | Rüdiger Thomsen-Fürst | Edoardo Torbianelli
