Details
This volume examines religious conversions in the long 19th century from a transregional perspective. Based on case studies, the contributions analyze socio-cultural milieus, global interdependencies, and interactions of converts who served as spiritual, religious, and cultural border crossers and knowledge bearers between alternative, competing social and belief systems. The focus is on contemporary historical as well as individual aspects that favored Islam-related changes of faith in the context of the First World War. The interdisciplinary approach enables to draw conclusions about the religious, ideological, and cultural stances of converts from Europe, USA, the Ottoman Empire, and Japan. With contributions by Gülfem Alıcı | Ulrich Brandenburg | Julia Eitzinger | Kenneth Garden | Cem Kara | Katherine Kelaidis | Stefan Reichmuth | Sebastian Rimestad | Katja Thörner | Joshua Weisberg
