Description
This book is concerned with the art and iconography of selected works from the pre-classical cultures of Mesoamerica, with a focus on death and the understanding of death. The work contributes from an artistic and cultural perspective to the study of the pre-classical cultures, in particular the first Mesoamerican high culture, that of the Olmec, and from an epistemological perspective to the development of the understanding of death. Its significance in terms of the study of religion is in the role of the recognition of death in the development of religion and the thematic role of death in religion, with a major role in the shaping and origins of religion attributed to the shamanic ideology passed down from the period of the Old Stone Age.
